I don’t know about you, but thrift shopping used to give me the chills! A million questions always flew through my mind when those two words were ever spoken.
What does thrift shopping even mean?
Does that mean the clothes are cheap?
Do you have to go to goodwill?
Are these clothes that people didn’t like?
Were these leftovers that never sold?
The list of questions goes on and on and on. Mainly the reason it gave me chills is the unorganized chaos that undoubtedly would be awaiting me. The thought gives me anxiety attacks! So you can probably imagine what I started to go through the minute I walked into the Nordstrom Rack at the North Gate Mall.
An anxiety attack immediately started to kick in as I desperately clung to my morning coffee and took long deep breaths. David turned me towards him, made me focus on him, as he told me to calm down and just take my time.
Seriously about to quit before I even started looking my eyes fell upon a gorgeous Michael Kors coat. It was perfect! soft fabric laced up sleeves, double-breasted, large hood, everything I could want in a coat. Best part… it fit everywhere including my hips! I tell you if I had found it a couple of months ago I would not have been able to get it over my hips!
This spurred me to a new high of what else I could find! So slowly I made my way through the countless racks only looking with my eyes. Nothing was popping out and once again I was ready to call it quits until I took another deep breath and tried again.
In the end, I found a number of pieces off the sale racks. I was trying to stick to a budget, but I was super curious what else I would have found if I had ventured away from the under $15 racks. Next time I will totally check out the other racks though!
I’m sure I will have a number of other fantastic tips to share with you as I continue to learn on my own. For now, I have 3 tips to share with you, mainly if you are shopping at Nordstrom Rack or Off Saks.
1. Arrive Early! In my experience, these stores full of people trying to get their favorite brands on sale. So if you are prone to anxiety attacks like I am, then definitely arrive early! I don’t like super packed stores. Or ones that are chaotic and unorganized either. My OCD goes into overdrive and I just want to quit right then and there. If you show up early though this will be less likely of a problem!
2. Go Slow! Thrift shopping takes patience. You won’t find something right off the bat. Move through each rack with purpose. Take a look at each piece you have in your hand. You might be surprised at what you find and what you like. While I was searching through the endless amount of clothes I asked myself if I could see myself in this. If the answer was no I moved on. Don’t buy for one occasion either, buy for multiple. Get pieces you can dress up or down!
3. Be Open Minded! You might not think you like something but if you try it on you just might. You might even think that thrift shopping at Nordstrom Rack or Off Saks is insane because the prices are still crazy high! I am here to tell you that simply isn’t true. You can get roughly 4-5 pieces of good quality tops from brands you love for the cost of 1 “cheap” shirt at target! Think quality over quantity too. The best part about taking your time and being open-minded is that you can actually have the best of both those worlds!
