Do you ever find yourself in an inspiration slump and feeling lost? Have you had trouble finding the motivation to fuel your day? Or the courage to just keep going even though it seems like everything is against you? How do you get yourself out of that state?
Something I have learned very recently, from my slightly new obsession: Lilly Singh, is that you have to schedule inspiration. This is something I never thought of doing! Currently, I am reading her book: How to be a Bawse. I am in love with it! One of my favorite parts is when she is talking about her transition from applying to graduate school and youtube.
The story she tells is inspirational! So inspirational in-fact that I tell it to myself everytime I feel down. She tells us that she is listening to an interview with Kate Winslet, love her by the way, and the Kate is telling everyone that you shouldn’t have a plan B. Of course when I was reading that, I was like… seriously??? no plan B! That’s crazy! But it made so much sense.
Working on plan B-Z is so exhausting. It’s wasted energy that could be spent working on your dream! At the end of the day you may have figured out plans B, C, D, and E, but you are also exhausted. The couch is screaming for you to lay on it turn on Netflix and binge watch your favorite show. *cough, cough, Orange is the New Black, Salem, Hemlock Grove, Sword Art Online, etc.*
Lilly goes on later in the book to say that she actually schedules time for inspiration. She also watches her go to interviews or shows when she is feeling uninspired. Reading that blew my mind! That might be silly to hear because hey… I’m a creative why wouldn’t I be inspired! but being creative doesn’t mean that I have a constant stream of rainbows and unicorns coming out of my eyes and ears.
My go-to activities to bring on some inspiration are music, books, movies, and blogs.
Music: I am very music driven. I believe that every piece of music, whether you like it or not, still tells a story. I particularly find inspiration in dark epic trailer music. However, I find ideas and inspiration within the most interesting songs. You would be surprised at the ideas I come up with!
Books: I mainly like to read fiction books. Honestly, I used to read a lot of young adult books but have recently become bored. I now read adult fiction books. I find they are more relatable now. However, I have recently submerged myself into non-fiction books. Books by Jen Sincero, Simon Sinek, Lilly Singh, and so many others, have been incredibly inspirational!
Movies: This one is a bit harder. When I am looking for inspiration I am usually in a particular mood. David and I have taken to watching entrepreneurial movies, or inspirational movies. Some of our favorites are Chef, Burnt, Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning Company, and several others. The Pitch Perfects are perfect for any occasion!
Blogs: Lifestyle, fitness, and writer blogs are my favorite! Which I guess is a good thing, since I write a very similar blog! I love seeing other peoples styles, getting ideas on what workouts to try, and how other writers are doing.
So those are mine. What are yours? I would love to hear how you find inspiration and motivation! Do you schedule time for it?
